Chengdu is more than 2,000 years old and was already the political, economic and cultural centre of western Sichuan by 400 years BC. Following the construction of the Dujiang dam in 256 BC, agriculture and handicraft industries flourished and the Chengdu plains became known as the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. Since then Chengdu became the capital city of Sichuan until present day.
During the Han Dynasty (206-220 BC) it was one of the 5 most famous cities in China and became the seat of education and literature. In the following Tang dynasty (618-907) arts and culture, science and technological developments reached new heights. It became home and visiting residences to many famous scholars and poets including renowned Li Bai, Du Fu, Lu Yu and Xue Tao. It was also the place where block painting was invented and the best silk brocades produced. |
