Angkor Wat was the icon of all temples in ancient Angkor city. It was built both as a temple as well as a mausoleum by the personified ‘god-king’ Suryavarman II during the 2nd half of the 12th century. It was a temple dedicated to the worship of the Hindu god Vishnu when the king was a alive and his mausoleum when he died, merged with the divinity.
However, the majority of the people of the Khmer empire converted to Buddhism by the 13th century and Angkor Wat also went through that transformation. Today, it is cared for by Buddhist monks and a Buddha image is now in place in the sanctuary. |
