Angkor Thom implies ‘Great City’ and was indeed the imperial city built by the ‘builder king’ Jayavarman VII from the end of the 12th to the beginning of the 13th century. It introduced a new style of architecture based on Buddhist cosmology and the mammoth Bayon temple was right at its heart. It was the political, religious and administrative centre for the entire Khmer empire and was said to be grander than any other city in Europe at that time. |
