Songpan marked the ancient boundary between Tibet and China. The insignificant looking small town of today witnessed a major historic event during the Tang Dynasty. King Songstsen Gampo of Tibet received his bride Princess Wen Cheng of China in 641 AD. It was said that there were 27 preceding kings before him but the history of Tibet really begun with him.
The princess was a member of the Emperor’s extended family and her entourage was escorted by General Li Dau Chung (King of Jiang-Xia). The journey across treacherous terrain into the high mountains took 2 years.
Princess Wen Cheng built Potala Palace and Xiao Zhau Temple in Tibet and was said to be responsible for converting the king and nation to Buddhism. The relics of Wen Cheng are now in the bigger and more famous Da-Zhau or Jokhang Temple built by another wife of the king, a Nepali Princess. |
