Selinunte was probably named after wild parsley (selinon in Greek) that grew in the area and was founded in 629 BC. It quickly became Magna Graecia (Greater Greece)’s most prosperous colony thus attracting many rivals especially Segesta. It suffered devastating attacks from Carthage (a North African power) in 409 and 250 BC and never recovered since.
The Greeks left a whole legacy of an acropolis and wonderful temples at strategic locations on rolling hills by the Mediterranean Sea but archaeologists are not certain of which Gods these temples were dedicated to due to the lack of records. The whole area within the ancient city was said to be the best virgin archaeological site in the world. |
