Pompeii awakened after being buried for more than 19 centuries under the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius thrown out during the horrible eruption of 79 AD. It was a city frozen in time - many building structures remained intact, paintings and scribbles on walls tell tales of everyday life.
Pompeii was founded in the 8th century BC and grew in importance and size as a port due to its advantageous position between North and South and the sea and rich hinterland. It became the target of subjugation - occupied by the Greeks in 6th century BC then the Etrucans and Samnites. In 310 BC the powerful Romans made it part of the emerging Roman state.
People feared the site after the devastation as if a curse had befallen onto it. The first ruins was said to be uncovered after 1,600 years, stopped for another 150 years before the city was said to be properly rediscovered. The excavations begun with the Bourbon rulers of Naples and has continued ever since. Most of the movable treasures are now displayed in the National Museum of Naples. |
