Besides its renowned leaning tower, Pisa was also known as one of Italy’s great city of arts. This is witnessed by the duomo and baptistery together with the unfortunate ‘bell tower’ in the Square of Miracles and other historic buildings in the city.
Located on the estuary of the Arno River, it was a seaport and maritime republic. It shipped the 1st crusades to the Holy Land and gained trading posts in the east during those journeys.
The city also produced one of the 'founders of modern science' - Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642), the revolutionary astronomer and physicist who only gained recognition after his death. |
