Buddhism was first introduced into China in the 1st century AD via the Silk Road from India to Mount Emei and over the years, it accumulated many treasures. The most significant of these was the Giant Buddha (or Grand or Great Buddha) of Leshan carved on the hillside of Mount Lingyun facing the confluence of 3 rivers - Min, Dadu and Qingyi in the early 8th century (during Tang Dynasty 618-907). It is the biggest Buddha sculpture in the world.
The Giant Buddha sculpture owed its origin to a monk named Hai Tong who believed that the Buddha’s image will help to prevent floods caused by the overflowing rivers. Construction started in 713 AD and completed in 803 AD and it was purely funded from donations. |
