Huanglong or ‘Yellow Dragon’ is revered by the Tibetans who live here since ancient times. The gully or ‘Huanglonggou’ bears resemblance to the Chinese (or Tibetan) mythical dragon in bracket shaped pools and earth surface of shoals that looked like scales of the dragon. It has its source at the sacred Xuebaoding or ‘Snow Mountain Peak ’
Scientifically, the unique and beautiful features are a geological wonder combining the effects of natural karst landforms and travertine depositions on a very large scale. The gully winds through lush and pristine alpine forests as it makes its way down to the lower end of the valley.
Huanglong has been declared a world heritage by UNESCO in 1992. |
