Emei Mountain or Emeishan was inhabited as early as 10,000 years ago. It was one of the 4 most sacred mountain in China and the 1st venue to receive Buddhism from India in the 1st century AD via the Silk Road. From here it spread throughout the country and by the middle of the 6th century, China became the centre of Buddhism in Asia.
Another legendary artform that developed in Emei Mountain was Emei Wushu practised by monks and nuns which is one of the 3 gems in Chinese Wushu.
Emei Mountain including Leshan Giant Buddha is listed as a mixed site in UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its exceptional cultural significance and outstanding environmental conservation. |
