Dujiangyan (or Dujiang Dam) is key to a great civilization that flourished in Chengdu and Sichuan since its construction in 256 BC. This was during the ‘Warring States Period’ (475-221 BC) before the unification of China under the infamous first emperor Qin Shi Huangdi.
The Governor of Shu County named Li Bing built this ingenious dam, dividing and redirecting appropriate volumes of water in the Min River to irrigate crops and control floods in the Sichuan basin. It was a great engineering feat and with reinforcements and enhancements, it still serve those purposes today. It is listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO. |
