Bayon was a Buddhist temple right in the centre of the imperial city Angkor Thom and was not very much lesser in size than Angkor Wat. It was built during the 13th century and represented a new style of temple architecture in ancient Angkor.
King Jayavarman VII was a Mahayana Buddhist and known as the ‘builder king’. He built other notable temples, hospitals, rest houses and roads for pilgrims to visit the great temples of Angkor. The Khmer empire was then at the zenith of its glory though it declined after his reign, probably due the diminished finances following his extensive building projects. |
