Yuyuan Gardens was said to be built in the 16th century by a famous and eccentric landscape architect called Zhang Nanyang who was appointed by the Phan family of the Ming court. It was brilliantly designed with the Chinese concept of balance between ‘yin’ (water, soft or feminine) and ‘yang’ (the rocks –hard, powerful).
Besides its great beauty, it is also a park of intrigue. During the Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864), it served as home base to the rebels known as the ‘Society of Small Swords’. Its former head-quarters in the Spring Hall is now an exhibition room for their antiquities. |
