The idea of a magnificent villa complete with an extraordinary garden lined with playful fountains was conceived and commissioned by the Cardinal of Ferrara and Governor of Tivoli, Ippolito d’Este II (1509-1572). More interesting fountains and beautifications were done by his successors who commissioned the best known artists of the time including Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The villa later fell into the hands of the Hapburgs and was returned to the Italian government after the 1st World War. Today, many of its fountains have been restored to its former delightful condition. |
