The Tuileries Garden or Jardin des Tuileries was once a rubbish tip and clay quarry for tiles (tuiles, hence the name Tuileries) converted into a garden in 1564 in front of the Palais des Tuileries which was burnt down during the Paris Commune in 1871.
It was redesigned by the celebrated gardener Andre Le Notre (1613-1700) who also created the gardens of Versailles and Champs-Elysees. It was then opened to the public and quickly became the first fashionable outdoor area. One of the earliest hot-air balloon of France was launched from here in 1783. |
