The area designated as a quasi-national park
encompasses majestic active volcano Mount Komagatake
and several lakes including Lake Onuma. These
lakes were formed as a result of damming
the mountain’s streams by mud flows during
its eruptions 500 years ago. In Japanese, ‘Onuma’
means big swamp. Similarly, in the language
of indigenous people of Hokkaido – the Ainus,
‘proto’ has the same meaning.
Besides its scenic beauty, the tranquil forests
and lakes are natural habitats to many
species of flora and fauna. Recreational facilities
are provided to cruise the lakes and track
on land including boats, bicycles, bridges linking
lakes and walking trails.
