In the heart of Sapporo, the capital of
Hokkaido, Odori Park meaning ‘large street’
runs from east to west through the middle
of the city separating it into North and
South. It is 105m in width. Although the
primary function is to operate as a fire
break, the park also provides the metropolis
with a very beautiful and pleasant green
lung.
The park is the venue of major celebrations
in the city. The Sapporo Snow Festival
is an annual international event drawing a
congregation of around a million local and
foreign participants and visitors. Other popular
festivities include the Lilac Festival in late
May, Sapporo Summer Festival between July and
August and Bon-Odori in mid-August.
A large underground shopping complex offering
a great variety of goods extend beneath
the park. It is also the centre where
many transportation lines converge and disseminate.
