Mua Roi Nuoc or Water Puppets is a highly skilled art form unique to North Vietnam. It involves the artful manoeuvres of the puppeteers and vibrant vocals of the Cheo singers accompanied by music from ancient classical instruments to bring the puppets to life. They perform skits based on daily events of the rural community and also highlight legends and national history.
The origin of this fascinating entertainment dates back to the 10th century in the padi fields of the Red River delta. The ponds and flooded padi fields after harvest were used as their stage to relate folktales passed from one generation to another. The wooden puppets often weighed up to 15 kg. a piece. |
